We moved into our house thirteen years ago. Grace was a toddler on the go — finger painting, throwing tantrums, dancing around the living room, snuggling in bed, playing in mud puddles, chasing the cat, and all those other crazy little bits and pieces that make up life. I often come across photos I took of every day moments like that, and they are like a trail of breadcrumbs leading my mind back to the time when the kids were little and life was pretty simple. To me, those images are far more treasured than the holiday-card-perfect family photos where we are all smiling at the camera. They are real, and honest, and funny, together create a mosaic made up of the perfect imperfection of real life.
In an effort to capture these kinds of moments for my clients, one of my favorite kinds of sessions is the documentary style at-home session that I call “Everyday Stories”. I spend a few hours with my clients, photographing them in their home, doing the kinds of things that make a family a family. Not dressed up and looking perfect in a beautiful park or location, but in their own little nest, the place that means the most.
Here is an Everyday Stories session from a quiet Saturday morning last winter.
