“I just want to capture him at two.” When I first chatted on the phone with Emmett’s mom, that’s what she told me. She didn’t care if they had a perfect family portrait with everyone looking into the camera; she just wanted to capture Emmett as he was — a busy two year old exploring his surroundings and finding magic in the world around him. This was also one of those clients who, as soon as I spoke with her on the phone, I knew I was going to like her. She seemed to have chosen me, not because of my pricing, or because her friends had used me, but because she appreciated my style of photography and felt like I was a good fit for her family. When I arrived at the session I knew it was going to be a fun one. Little Emmett was a little apprehensive at first, but we brought out some bubbles and let him lead us through the session and by the end he was having a great time. We blew bubbles, hauled rocks in a wheelbarrow, and I learned that a watering can is actually a “drill” in his little world. We explored the yard together, and chatted and I think, in the end, these images really do show Emmett at two. His mom sent me an email after she saw her gallery and this is what she said, “Thanks again for capturing the magic of a toddler’s life! Our hearts are full with the images of our spirited/lovable/stubborn Emmett. We are so grateful for your gift of photography.” And I love that.
